The main purpose of the 6-month apprenticeship is to train the apprentice in specific technical deliverables in the company in support of their main team assignment. The apprenticeship is hands-on, allowing the apprentice to develop employable skillsets both within Water Access Rwanda and elsewhere. At the end of the apprenticeship, the most promising candidates may be offered full-time employment while others are kept on a roster for future openings.

About the position

The Assembly Apprentice is responsible for assisting the Assembly Specialist/team in collecting components from workshops and assembling them on sites according to pre-established designs. This role is designed to provide hands-on experience and training in the assembly of mini-grid components.

Key Result/Learning Areas:

  1. Learning and Development: Gaining knowledge and skills in the assembly of mini-grid components, including public kiosks, electrical systems, plumbing systems, elevated tank structures, solar panels, and other prefabricated parts.
  2. Safety Compliance: Adhering to safety guidelines and protocols throughout the assembly process to minimize risks and ensure a safe working environment.
  3. Support and Assistance: Assisting the Assembly Specialist in completing the assembly of each mini-grid within the designated timeframe to meet production goals.

Responsibilities:

  1. Assisting in assembling the public kiosk, which serves as a central point for accessing safe water and houses the filtration, electric, and other key components of the INUMA Mini-grid.
  2. Helping to connect and install electrical components necessary for the mini-grid’s operation.
  3. Assisting in assembling the plumbing system required to distribute water from the mini-grid to various outlets.
  4. Supporting the assembly of the elevated tank support structure that stores water for distribution.
  5. Helping to assemble the pressed steel tank and ensuring no leakages are detectable.
  6. Assisting in assembling other prefabricated parts necessary for the construction of the mini-grid, including household connections.
  7. Learning to manage assembly tasks and timelines under the guidance of the Assembly Specialist.
  8. Collaborating with the assembly team and other departments to collect quality materials and ensure machinery remains functional.
  9. Report any issues that arise in the field to the assembly specialist and assist in resolving them.
  10. Ensuring safety and quality practices are followed on the field.

We expect you to possess good technical knowledge and great manual dexterity. It is also extremely important that you will be able to read instructions represented in manuals, drawings, schematics, etc., and follow them with precision.

Qualifications/requirements are:

  • Significant experience/knowledge with technical tools

  • Excellent hand-eye coordination and physical condition

  • Strong communication skills

  • Strong skills in mechanical works

  • Advanced Diploma in mechanical engineering
    Skills in welding and plumbing
    Studied areas related to mechanical
    Worked on water and sanitation-related works
    Took some short courses related to mechanical
    Able to commit six days a week to mainly field-based operations
    Enthusiasm for hands-on work and desire to build a career in the technical fields
    Deep passion for seeing development in rural areas and self-perception as being an actor to make it happen.
    Desire to learn and openness to be coached.
    Ability to handle and work within a fast-moving environment.

    Benefits

    A Monthly Compensation of RWF 125,000 will be provided to all apprentices to assist with transport, food, and temporary accommodation.
    Access to sites for work will be provided.
    There is no other compensation or benefits beyond this and successful candidates will sign a waiver in this regard.
