The main purpose of the 6-month apprenticeship is to train the apprentice in specific technical deliverables in the company in support of their main team assignment. The apprenticeship is hands-on, allowing the apprentice to develop employable skillsets both within Water Access Rwanda and elsewhere. At the end of the apprenticeship, the most promising candidates may be offered full-time employment while others are kept on a roster for future openings.

Key Learning Areas (KLAs):

  • Systems care: Help in Planning and tracking the carrying out of effective preventive care of equipment at mini-grids that avoids both equipment failure and downtime. Maintains consistency of operations across all regions.
  • System Efficiency: Regularly help to monitor and optimize the efficiency of the mini-grid system to provide piped water up to standards of pressure, safety, and quantity available. Keeps a centralized monitoring dashboard for scalable operations.
  • Sustainability Practices: Support in Incorporating sustainability practices into the operation and maintenance of the mini-grid system by minimizing waste, and repairing, and repurposing equipment as much as possible.

Main Responsbilities:

1. Observing, learning, and understanding a wide range of services offered by the company while under the instruction of skilled technical staff including but not limited to:

  • Plan and schedule preventive maintenance and equipment care activities at mini-grids.
  • Ensure the execution of the said plan to avoid equipment failure, reduced system efficiency, and downtime.
  • Maintain consistency in operations across all regions by standardizing procedures and guidelines.
  • Regularly monitor the efficiency of the mini-grid system using performance metrics.
  • Optimize system operations to ensure the provision of piped water that meets standards of pressure, safety, and quantity.
  • Organizes and executes timely reactive maintenance activities whenever system efficiency is affected.
  • Maintain a centralized monitoring dashboard for tracking system performance and scalability.
  • Keeps up to date with the latest knowledge on equipment care and maintains a knowledge base on manufacturers care manuals.
  • Incorporate sustainability practices into the operation and maintenance procedures of the mini-grid system.

2. To be able to demonstrate gained skills and procedural mastery as the training period progresses by working independently or with a team, undertaking tasks as instructed, and increasing overall contribution to the department.

3. Document projects both for design purposes, archiving, or in producing quality reports for the company

4. To maintain a smart appearance and to act professionally at all times whether on or off the workplace.
5. To perform any other duties assigned.

Required Qualifications:

Diploma or technical degree in the following fields :
· Plumbing
· Electrical
· Water and Sanitation
· Surveying
·Water and Environmental Engineering
· Other related technical fields.

Attitudes:

Able to commit six days a week to mainly field-based operations
Enthusiasm for hands-on work and desire to build a career in the technical fields
Deep passion for seeing development in rural areas and self-perception as being an actor to make it happen.
Desire to learn and openness to be coached.
Ability to handle and work within a fast-moving environment.

Benefits

A Monthly Compensation of RWF 125,000 will be provided to all apprentices to assist with transport, food, and temporary accommodation.
Access to sites for work will be provided.
There is no other compensation or benefits beyond this and successful candidates will sign a waiver to this regard.
